Who are the Top Female Tattoo Artists in the USA you ask? Well actually you did ask…many times in your search terms. Maybe not YOU personally but lots of tattoo fans actively seek out the best artists and believe it or not this info can be a bit hard to track down, mainly because it is just opinion (my favorite!).
One persons article (or blog or magazine) may not agree with another because tastes vary, criteria is subjective and everyone has their favorites. Not to mention ridiculously talented artists appear on the scene regularly (yeah for tattoo fans!) so today’s list might be woefully incomplete 5 years from now.
Here is MY biased and subjective list for you to ponder and disagree with. The criteria is ; must be working in the USA, must work in a tattoo shop (no scratchers – even if they are crazy talented) and must be a woman (otherwise the title of the post makes no sense).
I chose artists that work in a variety of styles. Most (if not all) of them are already pretty well known. Some have been on TV (being on a show doesn’t make you talented BUT some very talented tattoo artists have been on TV – dig?)
I chose artists based on skill alone and not their standing in the tattoo community. There are many old school, legendary female tattoo artists out there – none of them are on this list. That is not a slight or an insult. I just wanted to highlight artists that I personally love that are probably working up to legendary status. Enough chatter – on to the list. (and it’s in alphabetical order!)
10 TOP Female Tattoo Artists
Hannah Aitchison – one of the undisputed masters of the pin-up girl. Hannah has been on TV and you probably recognize her name but have you taken a close look at her portfolio? – she is the real deal – CRAZY talented (and also a total sweetheart!) located at The Curiosity Shop in Pittsburgh, PA
Tina Bafaro – not only ridiculously talented but extremely nice – bonus! Tina learned from the legendary Madame Lazonga and works in Seattle, WA at her own shop (and she is inking one of my sleeves)
Erin Chance – Erin creates intensely detailed and richly color saturated tattoos that look like paintings – wow! Currently opening a studio – Unkindness Art – with fellow Top Ten-er Teresa Sharpe in Richmond, Virginia.
Kelly Doty – you like new school? You like creepy? Oh you definitely want to check out Kelly. Based in Massachusetts and in the process of opening her own studio The Gold Dust Gallery in Salem, MA Kelly is top notch! (PS – I am finally realizing a tattoo dream and have an apt. with Kelly in September – SO excited!!)
Idexa Stern – Idexa specializes in line work – both black and color. Her precision, composition and body placement are masterful! She is the owner of Black and Blue Tattoo in San Francisco, CA.
Ivana – if watercolor is your thing then Ivana is an artist you will love. Her vibrant, painterly style is incredible! She is based in Long Beach, CA at Outer Limits Tattoo.
Roxx – One of the most talented artists working in black work and dot work – her portfolio speaks for itself. If this bold style is your thing get on her wait list Now! Roxx is at 2Spirit Tattoo in San Francisco, CA
Kim Saigh – after a stint on LA Ink Kim disappeared from TV but has continued to create beautiful illustrative tattoos in the heart of LA at Memoir Tattoo.
Briana Sargent – dotwork, linework, watercolor – Briana’s style incorporates many different styles for a wild, unique and colorful tattoo. Brianna is the owner of BuJu Tattoo in San Diego, CA
Teresa Sharpe – If you have been reading this blog for a while (thanks!) you may know of my ardent appreciation for Ms. Sharpe and my repeated attempts to get tattooed by her.
Why? Because her work is so insanely good it hurts. Getting on her list is like trying to hop a ride on a Unicorn but I haven’t given up hope…yet. Teresa is in the process of leaving Studio 13 in Fort Wayne and relocating to Richmond VA to open Unkindnes Art with Erin Chance – power couple!
